HIMSS Venture Fair spotlights emerging mHealth companies

Today's debut of the HIMSS Venture Fair brings to the mHealth Summit a popular segment of the annual HIMSS conference and exhibition show that has been enthralling attendees since 2007.

The Mobile Health Venture Fair – Presented by mHIMSS will allow emerging mobile health vendors to pitch their products to investors, said Deborah Caruso, senior manager of corporate relations at HIMSS.

HIMSS officials have selected 13 emerging mobile health companies, out of 26 applicants, to give eight-minute presentations about their mobile health products to investors. The companies were selected based on their level of innovation and leadership, Caruso said.

Their financials also played a part.

"In the end, it's about making money for the investors, as well as for the entrepreneurs," she said. "Our review committee did a lot of work to figure out who would be the best."

The Mobile Health Venture Fair will be held from 2:30-7:45 p.m. today in Maryland Ballroom C. There is a separate $125 fee to attend, and attendees must also be registered to attend the 2011 mHealth Summit.

Wil Yu, from the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will give opening remarks.

Blankrome LLP, which helped create the event, is the principal sponsor and will moderate a panel discussion on raising capital and introduce the 13 companies, Caruso said.

Attendees are expected to include venture capitalists, investment bankers and other companies that want to network at the event, Caruso said.
